Topstep now offers 2 ways to pay for the Trading Combine: the Standard path and the No Activation Fee path. One charges less each month but bills you $149 when you pass. The other costs more each month but lets you skip the Topstep activation fee entirely. Which one is cheaper depends on a single number, and most traders underestimate it.

The Topstep No Activation Fee path is only cheaper if you pass the Trading Combine quickly, and how quickly depends on whether you switch on the Responsible Trading Advantage. With it off, No Activation Fee wins if you get funded within 3 attempts on a $50k, within 2 on a $100k and within 4 on a $150k. With it on, those windows stretch to 4 attempts on the $50k and $100k, and on the $150k No Activation Fee is cheaper however long you take. Take longer than that and the Standard path, with its $149 activation fee, is the cheaper way to reach an Express Funded Account.

Both paths use the same Combine: the same profit targets, Maximum Loss Limit, consistency target and payout rules. The only difference is how you pay. Standard charges a lower monthly subscription plus a one-off $149 activation fee when you pass. No Activation Fee charges a higher monthly subscription and nothing when you pass.

In this article I’ll put the 2 paths side by side, work out the exact break-even point for each account size, and explain which type of trader each path actually suits.

Topstep Standard vs No Activation Fee: Pricing Compared

AccountStandard monthlyNo Activation Fee monthly, RTA offNo Activation Fee monthly, RTA on
    $50k$49$95$85
    $100k$99$149$129
    $150k$199$229$199
    Activation fee on passing$149$0$0

RTA is the Responsible Trading Advantage, covered in full below. On Topstep’s pricing page it discounts only the No Activation Fee path. Standard stays at $49, $99 and $199 whether it is on or off.

Resets follow the monthly price. On both paths, Topstep’s pricing page prices a reset at the monthly subscription for your account size, including the Responsible Trading Advantage discount. So with it off, a failed attempt always costs more on No Activation Fee. With it on, the gap narrows, and on the $150k a reset costs $199 on either path.

The Combine itself doesn’t change between paths:

AccountProfit targetMaximum Loss LimitMax position size
    $50k$3,000$2,0005 contracts
    $100k$6,000$3,00010 contracts
    $150k$9,000$4,50015 contracts

The Maximum Loss Limit is TRAILING (EOD): the floor moves up at the end of each trading day, but a breach is triggered in real time, including on open positions. The consistency target also applies on both paths: your best day must stay below 55% of the profit target, which is $1,650 on a $50k account. Our prop firm drawdown guide covers how end-of-day trailing drawdown behaves in practice.

This means the choice between paths is purely financial. Your rules, your funded account and your payouts are identical either way.

Topstep Responsible Trading Advantage: On or Off?

The Responsible Trading Advantage is Topstep’s name for adding a Daily Loss Limit when you buy the Combine. With it on, the Combine and Express Funded Account close your positions and stop you trading for the rest of the session once you hit that limit. In exchange, Topstep doubles your Express Funded Account payout caps and, on the No Activation Fee path, takes $10 to $30 off the monthly price.

AccountDaily Loss LimitStandard payout cap, off / onConsistency payout cap, off / onNo Activation Fee discount
    $50k$1,000$2,000 / $4,000$3,000 / $6,000-$10
    $100k$2,000$3,000 / $6,000$4,000 / $8,000-$20
    $150k$3,000$5,000 / $10,000$6,000 / $12,000-$30

Hitting the Daily Loss Limit is not a rule violation. Open positions are flattened, and you trade again the next session. The cost is flexibility. On a $50k you can lose no more than $1,000 in a day, half of the $2,000 Maximum Loss Limit, so a strategy that sometimes sits through a deep intraday drawdown before recovering will be cut off. Also, according to Topstep’s help center, a Daily Loss Limit set at purchase cannot be changed later.

For most traders I think it is worth switching on. A daily cap of half the Maximum Loss Limit rarely binds for a trader who is managing risk properly, and double payout caps matter far more than the discount once you are funded. The exception is a trader whose strategy regularly needs more than half the Maximum Loss Limit in a single session.

Is Topstep’s No Activation Fee Worth It? The Break-Even Maths

To compare the 2 paths fairly, count every monthly subscription and every reset as 1 attempt, since both cost the same amount on each path. Then the total cost of getting funded is:

    • Standard: attempts × Standard monthly price + $149
    • No Activation Fee: attempts × No Activation Fee monthly price

The break-even point is the $149 activation fee divided by the monthly price gap. With the Responsible Trading Advantage off, the gap is $46 on a $50k, $50 on a $100k and $30 on a $150k, so the paths cost the same after 3.2, 3.0 and 5.0 attempts. With it on, the discount narrows the gap to $36 and $30, pushing break-even to 4.1 and 5.0 attempts, and on the $150k the gap disappears entirely.

Here is the total cost of reaching a funded account on each path, by number of attempts, with the Responsible Trading Advantage off.

    Attempts$50k Standard$50k No Activation Fee$100k Standard$100k No Activation Fee$150k Standard$150k No Activation Fee
    1$198$95$248$149$348$229
    2$247$190$347$298$547$458
    3$296$285$446$447$746$687
    4$345$380$545$596$945$916
    5$394$475$644$745$1,144$1,145
    6$443$570$743$894$1,343$1,374

The cheaper path at each point is in bold.

Chart showing when Topstep's No Activation Fee path becomes more expensive than Standard

So on a $50k, No Activation Fee saves you $103 if you pass first time, but costs you $127 more if it takes 6 attempts. The $100k is effectively a tie at 3 attempts, separated by $1. The $150k is the account where No Activation Fee is most forgiving, because the monthly premium is the smallest in both dollar and percentage terms.

Now the same table with the Responsible Trading Advantage on.

    Attempts$50k Standard$50k No Activation Fee$100k Standard$100k No Activation Fee$150k Standard$150k No Activation Fee
    1$198$85$248$129$348$199
    2$247$170$347$258$547$398
    3$296$255$446$387$746$597
    4$345$340$545$516$945$796
    5$394$425$644$645$1,144$995
    6$443$510$743$774$1,343$1,194

The discount changes the picture. On the $50k and $100k, No Activation Fee now stays cheaper through 4 attempts. On the $150k it is always $149 cheaper, because the discounted monthly price matches Standard exactly and you never pay the activation fee.

The real question isn’t which path is cheaper. It’s how many attempts you honestly expect to need.

Which Topstep Path Should You Choose?

Choose No Activation Fee if you have a track record

Topstep itself pitches No Activation Fee at traders who already trade with discipline, and the maths agrees. If you have passed a futures evaluation before, or you have months of sim results that would clear a $3,000 target without breaching a $2,000 trailing limit, you are the trader most likely to pass within 2 or 3 attempts. Pass in 2 attempts and No Activation Fee saves you $57 on a $50k, $49 on a $100k and $89 on a $150k. With the Responsible Trading Advantage on, those savings grow to $77, $89 and $149.

It also removes the $149 bill at the moment you pass, which some traders will value for cash flow alone.

Choose Standard if you are still learning

Be honest about the base rate. According to Topstep’s own 2025 Trader Performance Statistics, 16.8% of all Trading Combines started between January and December 2025 were passed. That is roughly 1 in 6.

Chance of passing a Topstep Combine within 1 to 10 attempts at a 16.8% pass rate

If every Combine carried the same 16.8% chance, the average trader would need about 6 attempts to get funded, which is past the break-even point on every account size except the $150k with the Responsible Trading Advantage on. The chance of passing within 3 attempts would be only around 42%. In reality attempts aren’t equal: a smaller group of skilled traders passes more often and lifts the overall figure, so a typical trader’s odds may be lower than 16.8%. That is why an honest view of your own results matters more than the headline number.

Standard also has a hidden advantage for traders who never pass. The $149 is only charged if you pass, so a trader who spends 4 months on a $50k and gives up has paid $196 on Standard against $380 on No Activation Fee, or $340 with the Responsible Trading Advantage on. The Standard path caps your downside. The No Activation Fee path charges you a premium every month in advance for a pass that may not come.

Total cost of 4 failed Topstep attempts on Standard vs No Activation Fee

    The $150k is the exception

On the $150k, the No Activation Fee premium is $30 a month with the Responsible Trading Advantage off, or 15% on top of the Standard price, so you would need 5 attempts before Standard becomes cheaper. With it on, the premium disappears: both paths cost $199 a month, and No Activation Fee saves you the $149 activation fee. Even a trader who never passes pays the same on either path. On the $150k with the Responsible Trading Advantage on, I can’t see a reason to choose Standard.

    Check discounts before you decide

Topstep runs regular promotions, and a percentage discount on the monthly subscription shifts these break-even points. A discount that applies only to monthly fees makes No Activation Fee relatively cheaper, because its monthly price is higher. Check the latest Topstep discount codes and rerun the maths with the discounted prices before you subscribe.

    Topstep Activation Fee FAQ

How much is the Topstep activation fee?

On the Standard path, the activation fee is $149, charged once when you pass the Trading Combine and activate your Express Funded Account. On the No Activation Fee path, it is $0.

Are the rules different on the No Activation Fee path?

No. Profit targets, the Maximum Loss Limit, the consistency target, position limits and payout options are the same on both paths. Only the pricing changes.

Can I switch from Standard to No Activation Fee?

The path is attached to the Combine subscription you buy, so check with Topstep support before switching mid-subscription. The simplest approach is to choose the path when you start a new Combine.

Do resets cost more on No Activation Fee?

Usually. A reset costs the same as your monthly subscription: $95, $149 or $229 on No Activation Fee, or $85, $129 or $199 with the Responsible Trading Advantage on, compared with $49, $99 or $199 on Standard. The one exception is the $150k with the Responsible Trading Advantage on, where a reset costs $199 on both paths.

Which Topstep account size is best value on No Activation Fee?

The $150k, especially with the Responsible Trading Advantage on. Its discounted monthly price matches Standard at $199, so No Activation Fee is cheaper at every attempt count. With it off, No Activation Fee stays cheaper for up to 4 attempts.

What is Topstep’s Responsible Trading Advantage?

It is an optional Daily Loss Limit of $1,000, $2,000 or $3,000, depending on account size, that you add when you buy the Combine. It doubles your Express Funded Account payout caps and takes $10 to $30 a month off the No Activation Fee path. Hitting the limit ends your trading for that session, but it is not a rule violation.

    Conclusion

No Activation Fee is a bet on yourself. You pay a premium every month in exchange for skipping a fee you only owe if you pass. For a trader with a proven edge, that bet pays off. For most traders, who need more attempts than they expect, the Standard path is the cheaper route to a funded account and the cheaper way to fail.

My default recommendation is to switch the Responsible Trading Advantage on, then choose No Activation Fee on the $150k and Standard on the $50k and $100k. Only move to No Activation Fee on the smaller accounts if you can honestly say you expect to pass within 3 or 4 attempts.
